William Merrifield - Seniors sharing gardening experiences with youth
Yeah! The truck has arrived. The children were very excited to see Phil coming - Mrs. Palazzi's Grade 4/5 class have had weekly meetings with our Fun Horticultural Learning Program where Seniors are sharing the gardening experiences with the youth.
The soil from Lemieux's is being used in three areas:
For a cedar box planter - Peter Gagnon led in the construction of the box where the students were taught how to use power tools and cedar boards.
Recycling a wooden palette to turn it into a garden bed. This project was led by Judy Falkins where the landscape cloth had to be measured, cut and the stapled into place. (Home Depot donated supplies used for this project).
Priscilla Hagen helped the students to separate the Marigold flowers (donated by Downings) which will later be planted into the garden beds.
The mound of garden soil will be turned into a perennial bed with a variety of drought resistant plants.
These projects are facilitated by Halina Peltonen of Arts & Crafts on Wheels.
It is with great appreciation that a grant has come through by the Federal Government for these gardening projects to be able to continue with seniors sharing their gardening experiences with our youth.
The Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie & District has, through great efforts, made it possible for these projects to become alive and successful. It is with a team effort that many are being reached and able to encourage one another in many areas - from inside the office to the ground work outside.
Lemieux's has become one of the major sponsors and we greatly appreciate their continued support of our program.
Thank you Cathy and Phil for being there for us - for helping to change the lives of many children and all who come out to assist.
Your donations are greatly appreciated as well as the extra information about gardening.
Sincerely, Halina Peltonen

Hands-on Gardening for Young and Old alike

A fun way to learn to garden is definitely hands-on. There's nothing like getting your hands dirty. Lemieux Composting in conjunction with the Arts Council supported both Youth and Seniors by supplying the garden mix and wood mulches at their various locations.
St. Bernadette School Students Grow Their Own
May 2, 2011
Thanks to the Good Friday holiday Grade 7 students at St. Bernadette Catholic School celebrated Earth Day a little later.
Thanks to generous donations the students planted a variety of herbs and vegetables in wooden planters using soil donated from Lemieux Composting and Haul Away. Kathy Lemieux led the educational lesson by instructing students on the proper soil types and what is the best type of soil used to grow vegetables and herbs.

A special thank you also goes out to the students in the St. Mary's College woodworking class who built the planters and SooMill for donating lumber.
Kids Used To Eat Mud Pies, Now-a-Days They Eat Dirt Cups!
April 26, 2010
Kathy Lemieux of Lemieux Composting joined Michelle Albert’s Grade 3 Class at R.M. Moore School to celebrate Earth Day.
This included playing in the dirt and planting bean seeds. This supported their learning unit about different types of earth and how important it is to have healthy soil to grow in.

For the students this involved rolling up your sleeves to feel the different textures, decide which sample held moisture best and the advantages of using good earth.
Each student made their own planting mixture using the following choices of sand, black loam and organic compost in a cup to plant their seed.
It will be exciting to see in a couple of weeks whose grows the fastest. Lemieux Composting shared their gardener’s secret “organic compost”.
You can never use too much compost was the advice given. Lemieux Composting supplied each student with their own dirt cup to eat, a delicious mixture of chocolate pudding and crumbled cookies topped with gummy worms.
